Hangar Party took place on Sunday...

by Graham Email

...at the new hangar in Lancaster. Of course, one challenge was that the Saturday temps were in the high 80's. However, when I woke up on Sunday morning and stuck my nose out of the patio door, it was ******* freezing.
I seriously considered postponing the event. However, when I phoned around and found out that several people were planning to come anyway, I put postponement to the back of my mind. In order to avoid legal action for frostbite and pneumonia, I drove over to Home Depot and bought a forced air heater and the propane cylinder to go with it. That, plus the snacks and drinks, kept everybody happy. The cafe at Lancaster also sold a number of coffees and a couple of lunches. We kept the hangar doors closed except for pulling out and pushing in the plane.
The following canardians arrived (thanks guys):

Doug Bryan
Scott Carter
Ron Gowan
James Redmon

In addition, Gerhard Deffner flew in with Ron Handley and Tom Allen flew in with Sheila in, er, "normal" planes.
I received apologies from Vance Atkinson, whose Cozy III is undergoing signficant overhaul, Jesse Huerta (suspected magneto problem on his Cozy IV) and CC Chamberlain.
Highlight of the afternoon was a 5-ship formation departure from runway 31, with me in the lead on the left, taking my sister for her first ever backseat canard pusher flight. After takeoff I did a right 360 to move to the back and the 4 other guys did a low fly-past, then I followed them. The fun part is of course the 2g pullup at the end of the runway. I did another pass just for grins and then landed back on 31. My sister liked all of the flight except for the steep turns - I believe that she still thinks she is going to fall out of the plane. It must have been OK, however, since she said that next time she will let me fly her to Fredericksburg for lunch. Now all I have to do is to work out how Marsha is going to get down there...I guess it will need to be a canard convoy.
Thanks to everybody who attended. I now have a 35,000 BTU forced air heater available for local canardian use if people find themselves having to work in their hangar or garage when it is too damn cold.

Moved to Lancaster today

by Graham Email

Using a Budget 16 foot truck, and 3 instances of child labour (payment: breakfast and lunch), I moved all of the hangar equipment from Dallas Executive to Lancaster from 09.00 to 15.00.
I then flew the plane the 8 minute hop to its new home.
131JF is now sleeping peacefully on a nice, flat, high-quality concrete floor in Hangar #11 in Lancaster.
The Hangar-Warming Party is scheduled for Sunday December 4th from 12.00 to 18.00 CST. All readers invited. Bring your plane if you've got one to bring.

Moving to Lancaster airport...

by Graham Email

For some time, Dallas Executive airport has been consistently ignoring my requests for remedial action on my hangar (small stuff like filling the holes in the asphalt floor was a remedial action that they could have done but did not).
They then painted the exterior of my hangar in the Summer. Frankly, this was of no interest to me - I could not care if the hangar was painted sky-blue pink with yellow dots, as long as the walls and roof perform their intended purpose. In the meantime they did not fix the major issue of the front of my hangar becoming a river whenever it rained heavily.
The turning point came when they upped my hangar rental from $215 a month to $270 a month this Summer, with a further increase to $290 if I did not sign a new hangar lease. Since they had not improved any amenities at all (the hangar electricity supply still cannot cope with a decent air compressor, and there is no water officially available anywhere on the site), I promptly went to Lancaster to check that airport out. The people there are really friendly, and they put me on the hangar waiting list.
Last week Lancaster contacted me to offer me a brand-new larger T-hangar, with water, restroom in the hangar block, concrete floor and bi-fold electric doors, for only $250 a month. It is only 33 minutes by car from my house. This was a no-brainer.
I am moving from Dallas Executive to Lancaster next weekend. It will be nice to have the plane in a new high-quality hangar at an airport which apparently does like small airplane owners. I am left with the uncomfortable impression that the management at Dallas Executive sees small plane owners as a nuisance, and that there is a campaign under way to force them out so that the site can be redeveloped for executive transport.

Rough River - The Rushes

I got back from Rough River at 16.00 on Sunday, flying non-stop from Tell City (TEL) in Indiana, which was selling 100LL at $2.85 a gallon - cheaper than auto fuel, dispensed from a brand-new self-serve pump.
Here are some links to pictures from Rough River:
